End of the Door Knob?

In Society's quest for universal design, the round door will be legislated out of existence.  Effective next March, the City of Vancouver, with its own building code, will require lever handles on all doors and lever faucets in all new housing construction.  Perhaps the first step towards other building code jurisdictions to do the same.  See our Pinterest collection of unusual doors and door knockers.

Designing and Building with Bacteria Could be the Future of Architecture

It might not be long before we’re able to construct buildings with bacteria.  Biology, rather than machining, is now emerging as a leading contender to assemble our future environment.  Medicine and biofuels have tapped biology for mass production, but more robust materials for everyday life--roofs, beams, floor panels, car seats--are still the domain of factories.  Now the ability to redirect and engineer biological processes and then capture this understanding in computational models, means that cells could soon become our factories.

Don't Complain About Using Design Professionals, Getting Permits, or Following the Building Code

How many people die in building collapses in India.  The result is a staggering indictment of India's structural safety standards - 2,651 dead and 850 injured from the collapse of 2,737 structures in 2012.  Resulting from bad workmanship, poor monitoring, corruption, and poverty.

This 105 storey building holds the world record as the “world’s tallest unoccupied building.” Due to a seemingly endless series of problems, including electricity and food shortages, the tower, which was started construction in 1987, and was originally meant to open in 1992, is still under construction.
